A Healthy Diet

When most people hear the word diet they automatically think of food restriction in order to lose weight. The actual definition of diet is the sum of food and drink consumed by an individual.

Many cultures have had traditional diets for thousands of years based on their location, climate, religious beliefs and other factors. We have all heard of the “heart healthy” mediterranean diet which emphasizes a lot of fruits, vegetables, fish and whole gains and stems from the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

A healthy diet can be generally defined as one that provides the necessary macro and micro nutrients to help maintain overall health. There are a plethora of organizations, institutions and associations worldwide that offers their interpretation of what a healthy diet should include.

In general they all in one form or another promote these basic key elements:
• Eat a wide variety of nutrient rich foods.
• Eat in moderation and at regular intervals throughout the day.
• Balance caloric intake with energy expenditure to maintain weight
• Limit intake of foods high in simple, refined sugars.
• Include high fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes as often as possible.
• Limit intake of saturated and hydrogenated fats.
• Maintain adequate intake of micronutrients (vitamins & minerals).
• Avoid or limit intake of processed foods.
• Maintain proper hydration levels.
• Consume alcohol in moderation.

So a healthy diet is not about restriction but more about moderation, variety and inclusion of certain essential elements.

Everybody is unique and so is their specific formula for a healthy diet. Personal taste and preference play a huge role in exactly what you consume but the principles remain no matter where in the world you may live.
